Wondering if you should attend BlogWorld And New Media Expo 2010 in October? Well, here's my experience from when I attended.
In 2008, I attended The New Media Expo when it was a separate event from BlogWorld. I was fresh from taking Podcast Secrets with two of my trusted mentors Paul Colligan and Alex Mandossian, and just itching to learn all that I could about podcasting and New Media overall, and to move forward with my first podcast. It also didn't hurt that I was living in Las Vegas at the time (where the event was being held).
Besides getting my first taste of the field's personalities like Gary Vaynerchuk (the keynote speaker), I was able to immerse myself in so much great content. I was able to get at least a new idea from each session, and, in fact, many new ideas at most sessions.
In addition, just being exposed to people who were already doing the cutting edge new media content creation I aspired to, was the final push I needed to believe that I could take the knowledge I learned about podcasting and finally plug in my microphone!
All this should have been enough to make attending the event worthwhile, but it got better.
I got to attend a session delivered by Paul Colligan himself about monetizing a podcast, and then meet him first-hand, so he could put a face to the person that had been asking all the questions during his course. This first meeting led to a coveted endorsement from Paul Colligan for my book What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know! (it's actually on the book's back cover), when I finished it a few months later.
Even more incredible was what happened on the final day of the New Media Expo. Not as many people attended the main session on Saturday morning, but I was there with my very first Starbucks Vivanno in-hand sitting attentively when another woman asked if the seat next to me was taken (it was not).
We got to talking before the session started, and it turned out that my fellow attendee actually worked for none other than Microsoft. I then learned that this person was charged with creating a directory of Podcasts for their Office Products Division.
I explained that I was an avid Office user (sorry Mac people, I know most of you cringe at the use of a PC, but I'm definitely a PC), and I teach others to monetize their knowledge in ways that often involve the use of Microsoft Office products, and What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know! was being written using Word. And I added that I was just about to launch my new podcast (well, it was in my mind to do so sometime by year-end).
My new Microsoft friend then advised that her area would consider my podcast for inclusion in the new Microsoft Office Products Podcast Directory that was being launched if I could meet her deadline...which was two weeks later. And here I was with a great podcast What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know(TM) The Podcast in my mind, but not in reality. I still hadn't plugged in my microphone.
Well, after the conference closed, I moved at lightning speed to learn to produce my podcast and had the first 5 episodes done by the end of Labor Day weekend and met the deadline.
It was so worth it, because the review committee liked What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know(TM) The Podcast so much that they chose it to be a featured podcast in its directory--where it stayed for the entire life of the Directory (about a year and a half). And they also linked to my book site and included me on one of their Divisional Blog posts. Love like that from Microsoft is priceless (and it was free)!
These are the kinds of things that only happen when you attend a major industry conference in-person. And the outcomes were instrumental in establishing credibility for both my podcast and my book from the very start.
So I felt compelled to attend the newly-combined BlogWorld And New Media Expo 2010, and I'll be in Vegas in October whether I move back (which may happen), or even if I do need to fly in. Who knows who I might meet this time?
