I've seen this Twitter newbie mistake so many times, it's time to call it to everyone's attention.
Ditch The Default Twitter Image In Your Profile!
As soon as I, or any experienced Twitter user sees they've gained a new follower that has the telltale default Twitter brown and blue image, we roll our eyes and immediately think--must be one of those "suspicious account activity, suspended account" losers or someone with just one or two tweets that are dated from last Summer.
I actually bother to check out the suspect follower's profile and see if it's someone I want to block or if it's just a new Twitter user--most people on Twitter will not. I've even nicely sent a direct message to let the person know about this Twitter newbie mistake. They thank me and say they'll fix it, and most never do.
Here's the problem--most Twitter users will not follow you back if you have the default Twitter image! And isn't that why you're on Twitter in the first place, to connect with others and attract a following interested in interacting with you?
And besides making people suspicious about connecting with you, if you're in business, you're missing out on a golden opportunity to reinforce your brand with every tweet you do.
If you're camera shy, or concerned about putting your image on the internet, use an image that reflects your personality, your topic of expertise, your favorite hobby, your pet, your logo, your product or content like a book, podcast, blog. You've heard the saying "image is everything". You get the idea.
Change your image and I guarantee you'll attract more Twitter followers!
