Why You Need An Information Product Line Plan

If you have at least one information product of your own creation, you need to have a plan for what else you will offer.  It is very rare for an infopreneur to make a fortune on one information product. 

 

Think about it.  If you sell a lot of your first information product, obviously you have done a great job of identifying a need in the marketplace, creating content that is considered valuable by your audience and getting the word out about it.  Don’t you want to capitalize on the success of your first offering by having a second offering?  A third offering?  And so on?

 

Of course you do!  Think about it. 

 

Hollywood creates a  movie that becomes a blockbuster hit.  We'll call it Super Over The Top Movie.  Even if they kill off a main character, you know that the sequels to Super Over The Top Movie 2, 3 and 25 are just around the corner.  And then when sequels run dry, Hollywood goes backwards and they create prequels until they pretty much hit the stone age.  Learn from Hollywood.  If you have a hit, you leverage it for all it is worth.

The most effective way to know what you're going to sell as your "sequels" is to do product planning upfront--just like any major company does (or should do).  There's no need to miss out on information product revenue because you lack an information product line plan.

Ask The Infopreneur Coach What Credentials Do I Need To Create An Information Product

Question:

 

Do I have to have certain credentials to create an Info Product?

 

Answer From Melanie Jordan, Everybody's Infopreneur Coach:

 

Absolutely not!  Although if you create an information product where many people would either expect a certain credential, or your audience will tend to have such a credential, it could be helpful.  Or having one, in certain cases could make it easier to establish your credibility.  For example, if you are a doctor or lawyer and writing about a related topic, that could certainly help.  However, don’t feel you have to have a certain credential to create an information product or service.  You just need to have proper disclosures so as not to mislead anyone. 

For example, I wrote my book Have Your Cheeseburger And Keep Your Health Too! as a lay person in the field of nutrition and healthy living, and was careful to let people know that.  However, since I had a lot of expertise from my own experiences, and was well-versed in the topics from experts and authoritative sources, there was no reason that I could not present my information in my own unique style, and from my personal experience, in the hope of helping others to lead healthier lives.

A Way For Infopreneurs To Get Free Blog Traffic Or Free Website Traffic Every Day

While it takes some effort, a great way to get free traffic to your web site or blog every single day if you write well, is to answer a couple of questions on an authority site related to your topic, or the people you want to network with every day.

 

Answering questions can help you accomplish 3 very important things as an infopreneur:

1.  a free back link to your blog or web site to help with SEO

2.  an opportunity to establish your credibility and personality with new audiences

3.  an opportunity to get free traffic from the initial group of readers who see your answer, additional readers who read the question and answer over time and those who see your answer picked up by a search engine.

 

Another bonus is that by participating and answering questions on such sites, you often get a whole profile page usually with multiple links to your other sites that people will check when they want to know who gave that great answer, and possibly special status.  And often you can mention your information product or service or leave an additional link in the answer as long as you really are being helpful.

 

 

For example, you can do this with social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Yahoo Answers (especially if your audience is not business-oriented), LinkedIn and there's probably an authoritative specialty site you can also be involved with.  I was recently elevated to "Health Maven" status at a site I regularly answer questions on called Wellsphere.com.  I participate since it's well-marketed and I have a book on healthy eating called Have Your Cheeseburger And Keep Your Health Too! with another work on healthy lifestyles coming out later in 2009.

Infopreneurs Don't Make This Deadly Teleseminar Mistake

True story.  I was on another so-called expert's teleseminar recently and he did something I've never experienced before, and it was not a good thing!

  

Like many teleseminar leaders he decided to open up the call for questions, but here's the really strange part.  Instead of using whatever system he was on to identify people with questions and call on them, he just started calling out area codes and then making that caller live and asking if they had a question!

 

What is this high school pop quiz time?  An attempt to try and call on the kid at the back of the room who appears not to be paying attention and embarrassing him?

 

Of course the result was either dead silence, or a shaken-up person saying they didn't have a question, or were just there to listen and so on.  It led to a very negative energy on the call, and left me cringing for the rest of it.  You could just sense the downward spiral for the call from there.

 

If you're going to give teleseminars yourself--and for infopreneurs, giving teleseminars is an important part of your marketing and information product and service creation--it always pays to listen to the trainings of others so you can learn what to emulate, and, as in this case, what not to.

 

Moral of the story:  Don't put your teleseminar participants on the spot!  If you don't have a bunch of people with questions before or during the event, you're doing something wrong.  Your teleseminar should be getting the wheels turning in the minds of your participants voluntarily!

Ask The Infopreneur Coach Why Give Away An Information Product

Question:

 

I've always wondered why infopreneurs will give away some of their information products and services for free and not charge for everything they create?  Even you recommend it.

 

Answer From Melanie Jordan, Everybody's Infopreneur Coach:

 

Infopreneurs can create all kinds of information products and services, and, yes, some are developed as freebies that are used to induce people to take an action, rather than having a cost associated with them.  Here are three great ways to use an information product as a freebie:

 

 

1.  To get someone to raise their hand and say OK, I like your stuff, you can have my e-mail address in exchange for this "bribe".

 

 

2.  To get someone to eventually buy a paid information product or service (hopefully sooner rather than later), because they got a peek into the knowledge you have through your freebie information products and services, believe you are the "real deal" and that your paid products will give them the full knowledge they seek.

 

 

3.  To get someone to buy a more comprehensive information product or service from you than they might have otherwise because the freebie information product, a.k.a "bonus" is something they decide they really want to have.

 

Of course, you will create plenty of information products and services that are available for purchase, and eventually more than make up for the fact that you gave away a sample of your work.
