5 New Year's Resolutions For Infopreneurs
Everyone is making New Year's Resolutions as I write this on New Year's Eve Day, and I figured that it should be no different for infopreneurs. So here are some New Year's Resolutions that I believe every infopreneur should make (and keep):
1. Make the creation of information products and services based on your own unique knowledge your focus.
Instead of trying to make money from selling the same tired PLR content that everyone else is pushing, or being the 50,000th affiliate to sell Jane Guru's information product, give yourself the competitive advantage of offering what you uniquely know. It doesn't mean that the subject matter of your information products and services will be ones never offered before, but it does mean they should be your unique take on them based on your experience and your style.
2. Leave no infopreneur revenue stone unturned.
Take the time to create a full information product and service line. If you're an author, a book alone rarely will lead to riches. If you do audios or videos, don't think that everyone always wants to get their information that way. If you're someone who only wants to offer information products and leaves out the more interactive and lucrative information services side because you only want to sell things 24/7 while you sleep, you're asleep at the wheel, and leaving some solid money on the table.
Web 2.0 is about making what you know available to your target markets in all the ways they wish to consume it. Don't let your personal preferences and prejudices affect your bank account.
3. Leave no list-building stone unturned
I can't tell you how many content creators have great stuff and little or no opt-in list of their own! Yes there are many ways to get others to publicize you to their lists, but if you don't have one of your own, you don't have your own group of people in this world who are your followers--your warm audience for what you have. Those who have actively indicated that they like what you have to offer, and they want to hear from you ongoing.
It's the difference between a telemarketing call at dinner and a call from a friend. One is warmly received (if they are truly your friend of course), and the other is greeted with all the warmness of a grizzly bear.
4. Shrug off people who unsubscribe to your list
So many infopreneurs take every list unsubscribe very personally, as if they did something wrong. You didn't. That poor misguided soul is now going to miss out on benefiting from your expertise. It's their loss, not yours. Besides, they probably would never have bought anything anyway.
5. Never lose your passion or belief in yourself, and what you have to uniquely offer to the world.
It's not easy to be an entrepreneur, and at times, it can be even tougher being an infopreneur. If you have a restaurant, it's easy for people to know exactly what you do, what you offer and how you hopefully make your money. When you create information products and services, sometimes it can be hard for people to "get" what you do--especially in the offline, regular world, where people don't know what Twitter is, what a podcast is, what a teleseminar is, or possibly even what an e-book is!
You may get pressure from others who want to know when you're going to get a "real" job? Or "when do you plan on making money?" Or you may put a tremendous amount of pressure to succeed on yourself, that can cloud your judgment, without anyone else even having to get into the mix.
Infopreneuring is not an internet "get rich overnight" proposition, it's a terrific, recession-proof business with almost no overhead that, most importantly, no employer can ever take away from you. It's one that you can, in theory, do part-time or full-time forever. Plus, what you create can live on long after you no longer exist. Your knowledge--what you know--is something you've worked hard to acquire, and you must always believe with all your heart that you can make your infopreneur business happen. If you do that, and you never lose sight of that vision; it will happen.
