What Infopreneurs Can Learn From Tim McGraw And Toby Keith
Hi All,
There was a lot of buzz both for and against Tim McGraw's condemnation of his record label, Curb Records for releasing a Greatest Hits 3 album supposedly without his knowledge, or creative or presentation involvement, after having just one studio album since his last one in 2006. What he really wanted released was a new studio album he had ready.
Whether you're a fan of Tim McGraw or not, think about the ramifications of this issue. A mega star like Tim McGraw appears to have very little control over which content he has released, when it is released or how it is released, because he is a prisoner of his record label. Tim McGraw does not control the sale or distribution of his content. His record label does.
On the other hand, we have another country mega star, Toby Keith, who appears to always be one
to break the rules. In 2005, instead of enslaving himself to a new record label when Dreamworks closed down, Toby Keith decided to take control over the sale and distribution of his content and founded his own label, Show Dog Nashville. Toby Keith just had an album come out too, but it was the new studio album That Don't Make Me A Bad Guy. He got to release the album he wanted, when he wanted to and how he wanted to because he has control over his intellectual property.
Tim McGraw could easily afford to start his own record label, but he hasn't so far (although it would be interesting to see if he does when his current contract is up), so he has to deal with not having control of his creative content. Toby Keith went the control route and has no worries in that regard.
Toby Keith is a true infopreneur.
Moral of the story--infopreneurs need to be very careful about giving up control of their content--be it an author to an editor or traditional publisher, or a new media creator that cuts a distribution deal with a network. Try to retain that intellectual property distribution and presentation control if at all possible. It's to your benefit in the long run, and matches the spirit of being an infopreneur in the first place.
Question: Which infopreneur business model do you follow (fan feelings aside)--the Tim McGraw model or the Toby Keith model? Please share your thoughts and comment on this blog post.
