Hi All,
It's all too common a scenario. I have a podcaster friend who started her internet radio show long before I started What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know(TM), The Podcast. She has a great voice and great content. She has listener statistics, episode download statistics and podcast feed subscriber statistics that most of us would kill for.
And my podcaster friend is leaving money on the table.
Why?
1. She has been so focused on having fans, she forget to make sure they became customers.
My podcaster friend hasn't integrated and executed a sound marketing plan focused on building her list into her great content. Her e-mail list can basically be counted on one hand despite tens of thousands of downloads.
2. My friend does not have her content in any form beyond podcasts.
It's an audio all or nothing. It is the equivalent of the old Wall Street mantra of diversification--don't have all your eggs in one basket. (And sometimes with the current stock market, it might feel like you shouldn't have your eggs in any basket). You need diversification in your content.
Some people like to learn by listening (audio, podcasts), some by reading (e-books, special reports, training manuals, transcripts), some by watching (video, podcasts), some through active participation (webinar, teleseminar, live event, group or individual coaching), and many like to learn through a combination of some or all of these.
You are leaving money on the table if you don't have an info product line plan that scopes out all the possible offerings you can have, and how you will strategically offer them in the marketplace.
You are leaving money on the table if you do not make what you know available in any and every possible format that someone could want. Besides not being Web 2.0, it's hurting your bank account!
3. My podcaster friend is giving away too much of her content for free.
Yes you need to have free information out there to build your audience. Like I have What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know - The Blog For Infopreneursthat you're reading right now, its companion podcast What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know(TM), The Podcast, articles at EzineArticles.com my free e-book (see offer below) and I gladly answer the questions that people ask me through direct messages on Twitter or via e-mail--just for starters.
But even an information product freebie should be appropriately leveraged to encourage opt-ins for your list. And it doesn't mean that EVERYTHING should be given away for free. For example, she has three versions of her podcast, all free. I have suggested to her that with her following, one should be free, one should be free but require opt-in, and one should be a premium podcast.
So remember, authors and bloggers need to think beyond the written word; podcasters need to think beyond the audio and video world, and coaches and speakers need to think beyond their information service oriented world. It's the difference between being a content provider and an infopreneur.

Laid Off? Becoming An Infopreneur Could Be Your Best New Career
Hi All,
I have a soft spot in my heart for anyone who has been laid off, downsized, rightsized, furloughed, forced into early retirement...whatever you want to call it. I feel your pain because I've been laid off twice myself. You've done nothing wrong, it's nothing personal. It's "just business" they say.
And I imagine you're like me, not one of those CEO's that mismanages a giant company, runs it into the ground and gets millions. That job I would have been fine with being laid off from!
If you're smart, getting laid off is your wake up call. From here on in, you have to "Look Out For Number One", like the Frank Stallone song from the movie Staying Alive (obscure reference I know).
I'm not saying never work for anyone again, as you may need to at first to pay the bills. What I am saying is don't ever leave yourself completely open to getting your livelihood taken away from you again.
How? If you got a golden handshake, was one of the lucky ones who did well with your company's employee stock, or have a supportive spouse or loved one, you might just want to make the leap to infopreneur right away. If you don't have a good severance package or at least six months or more of savings to fall back on, you need to moonlight. That's what I did early on too.
I've gone in and out of periods of employment as my finances dictated, but once you've been laid off, you never quite look at an employer the same way again. When it comes to being employed, you need to be unfaithful. You need to have a little something on the side for yourself.
William O'Neil, the founder of Investor's Business Daily had a great quote "it is what you do outside the hours of 9 to 5 that make all the difference." It's time YOU made that difference!
You can learn all about what infopreneuring is by checking out my free weekly podcast What You Know Is Worth More Than You Know(TM), The Podcast (start with episode 1 So What's All This About Infopreneuring and my free Treasury of Infopreneur FAQs.
In a nutshell, it is turning what you know about a particular topic, or possibly multiple topics, into what are known as information products (e.g. an e-book or training course), and information services (e.g. coaching services), and delivering that information in all the different ways (for example, audio, video, interactively and through the written word), that someone would want to learn from your knowledge. All of which translates your expertise into the ability to make money from what you know!
This is an easy side internet business to start-up at minimum cost (check out my podcast episode The Money Side Of Infopreneuring for more information on this), and a very flexible and legitimate work-at-home business (whether part-time of full-time. This is not like the so-called "be your own boss" franchises where you have to put up your life savings, and then work slave hours to make less than a fraction of what you made at your old job! Please check out my blog post 5 Ways Infopreneuring Is The Ultimate Home Based Business for the full scoop.
